HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED THERAPY?
While you might realize that therapy can help with life’s problems, it can sometimes be difficult to seek help or to even recognize when it is time to talk to a professional. One key thing to remember is that the sooner you seek assistance, the sooner you will start to experience relief. Instead of waiting until your symptoms get out of control, you should consider getting help as soon as you start to recognize that there might be a problem.
Some key signs that is might be time to see a therapist include:
The issue is causing significant distress or disruption in your life. If you feel that the problem you are facing interrupts important areas of your life including school, work, and relationships, it may be time to see if psychotherapy can help.
You are relying on unhealthy or dangerous coping mechanisms. If you find yourself dealing with your problem by smoking, drinking, overeating, or taking out your frustrations on others, seeking assistance can help you find healthier and more beneficial coping strategies.
Friends and family are concerned about your well-being. If it has reached a point where other people are worried about your emotional health, it may be time to see if psychotherapy can improve your psychological state.
Nothing you have tried so far has helped. You’ve read self-help books, explored some techniques you read about online, or even tried just ignoring the problem, yet things just seem to be staying the same or even getting worse. Just remember that you don’t have to wait until your problems become so overwhelming that coping seems impossible. Help is available and the sooner you reach out, the sooner you’ll be back on track to a healthier, happier state of mind.
But things aren’t that bad! Many people continue to be high functioning, despite experiencing psychological, emotional, and/or relational challenges. Sometimes we don’t recognize the toll it’s taking on us to continue to operate at a high level outwardly, while suffering inwardly. Let us help you acknowledge and identify what’s happening for you so we can work together to find new coping strategies that will allow you to keep moving forward without causing harm to you (or your productivity) in the long run.
HOW DOES INDIVIDUAL THERAPY WORK?
At Champion Family Therapy, we follow best practices across all models of psychotherapy. Together, we explore any concerns you have, take a detailed personal and family history according to your comfort level, and assess the scope of the challenge(s) you are facing. Your therapist will then offer possible approaches and you will decide together how to intervene. After a period of utilizing these interventions in your everyday life and once you've experienced a comfortable level of success, we discuss any next phases of treatment and/or tapering off therapy appointments. We review the work we've done and tools to carry forward so you can confront new challenges in the future with confidence.
HOW CAN INDIVIDUAL THERAPY BENEFIT ME?
Individual therapy is an opportunity to step away from the demands of life into protected time to explore, process thoughts and emotions, and identify needs. Your therapist will facilitate a deeper exploration of anything you feel is not working well for you. It’s okay to come to therapy feeling unsure about the source or nature of your concerns. Your therapist will help you navigate thoughts, emotions, and experiences to help clarify your concerns. Most individuals experience significant immediate benefit from verbalizing concerns, deepening understanding of them, and receiving validation from their therapist. At Champion Family Therapy, practical, solution-focused interventions will help you to change thoughts, behaviors and emotions that you find are problematic and to practice healthier ways of being.
